Sounds like your best recourse would be to pull the hard drive and test it in a Windows Machine, or dual-boot Windows on your Mac. Software that's actually useful, like Seatools, which does far more than Smart Monitoring, and is far better than the sub-standard disk utility built into Mac. I sdo not know. I am not usng Windows. I am using Mac OS X. There are no other drives attached. What is wrong with the drive is another issue in another thread. This thread is about getting SeaTools to run. The reason I am using SeaTools is because I can't format the drive. AlternativeTo is a free service that helps you find better alternatives to the products you love and hate. That's right, all the lists of alternatives are crowd-sourced, and that's what makes the data.

SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any other non-Seagate disc drive.
SeaTools for Windows tests USB, 1394, ATA (PATA/IDE), SATA and SCSI drives. It installs onto your system. SeaTools for Windows is completely data safe.

The decadent manufacturer tell you if your drive is failing already or it will fail! Seagate drives have the worst failure rate in their last 2 desktop generations. Barracuda 10 and 11 are just garbage.
Seagate would replace their smart test for just a basic model checker, one line only:
If HDD = (Barracuda 10 or Barracuda 11) and (HDD=Still_online) then it WILL FAIL on random (1min-6months).

Sorry to disappoint you, but as of Christmas Eve 2009 (aka 24 Dec 2009), Seatools 1.2.0.***1*** was out, not 1.2.0.*2*.
1.2.0.2 is a *newer* release - b/c as of Christmas / version 1.2.0.1, Windows 7 was not *officially* supported. Hence the version bump, to allow for Windows 7 Official Support.

I am an avid fisherman and use these SeaTools all the time ;p. I especially like the fish gutting utensil. -- joke
To previous reviewer: The official Microsoft developer recommendation is for applications to install dependencies into their own program files. This prevents them from over-writing other versions of those DLLs in the system folder. Of course, WFP fixes this issue for most system modules.

Seems to do what is says. But I take a point off because it installed the MS Visual C (2005) AGAIN. Why can't programs check to see if this is installed first? This is just like the days when old versions of Direct X would install over teh op of newer ones.

Screenshot of SeaTools for Windows 1.4.0.2. It has detected three hard disk drives, one of them (the second) is a Seagate Technology model for which it is designed. Three tests have been run on disks. In order: S.M.A.R.T test, short self-test, short generic test. | |

SeaTools is a computerhard disk analysis software developed and released by Seagate Technology. It exists as a version for DOS (bundled in a bootable medium with FreeDOS) and Microsoft Windows.
- 1Overview
Overview[edit]
Seagate Seatools For Mac
SeaTools is software to test and analyze hard disks on a hardware level. It can perform short and long drive self-tests and read/write tests, extract S.M.A.R.T. indicators and drive information, and perform advanced tests. It was created by Seagate in response to the fact that more than one third of all drives sent in for repair were actually not defective at all, thus creating unnecessary costs for retailers and the company by having to ship and analyze such disks.[1][2]
Free virus protection for mac. 'Avira Free Antivirus guards against malware without putting a strain on your Mac.' 'Avira strikes a nice balance between ease of use and quick access to advanced utilities' Secure.
SeaTools for DOS[edit]
SeaTools for DOS comes in a package with the FreeDOS operating system. It can be downloaded as a bootable ISO image from the Seagate website.
SeaTools for Windows[edit]
The Windows version of SeaTools supports any hard disk regardless of manufacturer. It supports analysis for disks connected via PATA/SATA, USB, IEEE 1394 and SCSI.
SeaTools Enterprise[edit]
The enterprise edition is still provided as a legacy version for Seagate hard disks only. It supports only SCSI or Fibre Channel drives and is designed for use with servers and workstations by supporting tests of multiple drives simultaneously as well as sequentially.
